Ever tried sleeping in to avoid life? I have. It probably sounds immature, and not very conclusive, but it’s an avoidance tactic that I remember using as a teenager to diffuse ‘stress’. Shame on me for thinking that life was tough back then! Little did teenage me know, reality would only sting harder as time went on.
Thankfully, although now I’m plagued with new, more grown up realities… call it stress 2.0... I’ve found a few little anecdotes that I thought to be share-worthy..
Call it my ‘I wish someone carefully explained this to me before I had my awkward teenage stage’ revelations if you will.
Back then, I thought that everything was some cathartic bomb and life was a minefield. Now, I pretty much recognize that that’s actually true… Except… I actually posess the power to deal with every hand that I’ve been dealt.
There’s a simple solution to my problems that always existed, but I was probably too self absorbed to take notice.
The key? Attitude.
To be more specific, the attitude you choose to start your day with determines pretty much the curve your day will take. The way you choose to treat people and approach situations pretty much creates a boomerang effect.
I’ve had some sleepless nights lately. I’ve felt overwhelmed, confused and the full array of emotions one would expect the average 20-something year old to experience. However, I’ve been making a conscious decision to approach my days with the right attitude… and it REALLY helps. I don’t wake up dwelling on how crappy my last day went, I instead try to focus on the things I have which make me truly happy, and the people who enable that happiness.
Of course, some days are still a little edgy, but making an effort to wake up and try my best to actively seek out the good instead of dwelling on the tougher aspects of my life has been quite a useful tool. I slip up ocassionally and still want to flail my fist in the air every now and again, but I’m becoming more mindful day by day of how easy it is to hit that mental reset button and correct my attitude towards everything around me.
Give it a go. It’s a work in progress… but I’m pretty sure you have more to gain than lose if you too have been stressed out lately.
